Linux-ification

I have been experimenting for a while with Linux.  I started off some years ago with Mandrake Linux, and although it worked (dual booting), It wasn’t satisfactory as I had a win modem and no chance for broadband at my exchange, so accessing the internet was a huge pain.

I then tried Suse Linux, which again worked well, but again I had problems with the modem, and still no broadband.

I have also played with a number of Live CD distros, having some success with DSL and KioskCD.  However the distro that has become a firm favourite and actually gets regular use, is Puppylinux.

Puppylinux is a live CD which runs totally in RAM.  It can even be configured to write session data back to the disk so that you don’t have to save anything on the harddisk at all. There is a strong community working on improving things, with a new release every couple of months, and lots of user contributed releases with particular specialisms.

Someone has even set up a Community Cyber Cafe in Scunthorpe for very little outlay.

I’m currently using it to give a 500Mhz Celeron with 164mb ram a new lease of life.
