The beauty is in the detail

Maybe I haven’t read enough blogs recently – Truth be told, I have very little time to idly browse my feed reader – but, what I am aware of is an increasing shift toward the ideas of the semantic web. This is not a new thing by far, but it is heartening to see that more and more people are actively taking the little steps that will build the semantic web.

I read some Sci-fi novels some years ago by Greg Egan. In them he has a ‘device’ or ‘agent’ (I wish I could remember what he called them) that goes out and gathers information for his characters. a sort of copernic on steroids AND with intelligence. I remember at the time (and this was before I got trapped in the library) that I wanted one of those.

Well now maybe we’re making some process…

In Daniel Keys Moran‘s Emerald Eyes a character logs in to a public terminal and quickly scans a set of headlines chosen especially by his agent software. I can remember thinking that would be really cool someday – it was set right around 2030. One part of the plot of the sequel, The Long Run, involved an agent that had achieve sentience and had carefully hidden his existence for years.

Thanks for the pointer. I don’t seem to be able to find a copy in my local library catalogue… I’ll keep looking!
