Wikipedia founder plans search engine – Information World Review
“Open source search would let users tweak code”
Interesting stuff. So is this a chance to build our own ranking algorithms? Will we be able to specifiy sources that we trust more than others? In a recent exchange on the NGC4LIB mailing list, Karen Coyle shared that Google don’t include book results in their normal search results because of the challenges of ranking.
Of course, you can build a search engine, but can you make people use it? Will the search building process and results be compelling enough for our library users to use? or will a wikisearch be a rather esoteric experiment in collaborative search engine design?
It will be interesting to see how much technical knowledge will be required to help with a wikisearch.
