Wobbly Outlines

I wonder if it would be possible to construct an image format such as Gif or Jpg, that did not rely on an image being rectangular (XX by XX)? For example if you had a screen shot such as that found on the Firefox page I would want to perhaps have the “unused” portions of the image non-existing.

Then I wouldn’t have to worry about weird Gif backgroundness with softned edges, and could have quite complex shapes that text could feasably wrap around. Al you would need is for the browser to load some sort of container of the correct geometry, perhaps with a centre point set as the main positioning handle? Then text could flow around the boundries of the shape.

I have no idea if this is even remotely possible, but I just wonders.
